TEACHING

The foundation of my teaching philosophy rests on two pillars:

Discipline and Discovery.

I believe with ferocity that learning the violin need not be a stuffy and elitist pursuit.

I can help you reach your musical goals. Whether you want to play pop or chamber music, learn fiddle tunes from around the world, jam with bluegrass or jazz musicians, or hone your electric tone, I LOVE teaching and work to ensure that every lesson is stress-free and rewarding for every student.

Discipline: I am firmly dedicated to helping my students develop a technical foundation rooted in classical violin technique.

Discovery: It is my job to guide you on your individual musical journey.

I specialize in nurturing the abilities of intermediate and advancing students of all ages and neurodiversities and am currently teaching internationally via Zoom Pro and in person at my studio in Toronto.

I am a founding member of Bowed Arts, a collective of like-minded string music educators focused on providing accessible, inclusive and relevant group and private instruction.

I’m committed to developing the musician that exists within us all and guiding you as you create and explore sound and discover that there are no limitations of what you can do with your violin. Regardless of the genre you want to learn or the direction you want to go, practicing music will bolster your brain power and enrich all areas of your life.

With 15 years of teaching experience, I’ve developed a unique approach to pedagogy where I create customized lesson plans that cater to the individual needs and passions of every student.

With a background in the Suzuki and Royal Conservatory of Music methods, I went on to become the first violinist to graduate from Humber College's Jazz and Contemporary music program in 2011 under the study of jazz violin virtuoso Drew Jurecka. After studying in NYC with Mark O’Connor, I was one of the first Canadians certified to expound his revolutionary new violin method which combines Americana traditions with classical technique.

But I don’t subscribe to one method. I holistically combine all of these techniques and teach in a fun and joy-filled way.

I look forward to hearing from you!

“Laura is very good at teaching the violin. She is really good at simplifying very hard things. She makes my lessons fun and interesting and I look forward to seeing her each week.”

— Sadie (9 years old)

“Laura was able to seamlessly pivot her teaching to the current online reality and has been the most positive and consistent presence in my child’s education throughout this pandemic. I cannot recommend her highly enough!”
